1975-76 Real Cloutier WHA Quebec Nordiques Game Worn Jersey - 60-goal Season
Lot #24

The Quebec Nordiques were one of the original 12 WHA teams to begin play in 1972-73. They would prove to be one of the most financially successful WHA franchise’s, surviving the 7-year existence of the league and eventually merging into the NHL for 1979-80. Afterall, the fans in Quebec had waited over a half century for pro hockey to return to their town. The Nordiques would make the final round of the Avco World Finals two times and they emerged victorious in 1976-77.

This road blue heavyweight dureen gamer by Maska was worn by Real Cloutier during the 1975-76 WHA season, his 2nd year in the league. Cloutier was a 1st round draft choice of both the Quebec Nordiques and Chicago Blackhawks during the mid 1970’s. He joined the Nordiques franchise in 1974-75 and remained in Quebec for 9 seasons thru both the WHA days and then post NHL expansion. Real finished his career spending parts of 2 seasons with the Buffalo Sabres.

In a poll taken of the 50 greatest WHA players of all-time, Cloutier earned the number 7 spot on that list. During his WHA years, Real shattered the 100-point barrier in every season he played except his first. A career best effort came during the 1976-77 campaign, as Cloutier netted 141 points in 76 games. Cloutier captured the W.D. Hunter trophy twice, which was awarded to the WHA’s leading scorer. He led the WHA in scoring in 1976-77 and 1978-79, the final year of the league’s existence. During that final WHA season, Cloutier lit the lamp a miraculous 75 times which proved to be the 2nd best total in the history of the WHA behind only Bobby Hull’s 77 in 1974-75.

Despite not playing in the WHA’s initial two seasons, Cloutier ended his WHA career 3rd on the all-time goal-scoring list and 4th on the all-time points scoring list. He was also instrumental in helping the Nordiques to Avco Cup glory in 1977 with 14 goals and 27 points in 17 post-season games. Real was 4 times a 1st or 2nd Team WHA All Star in his 5 seasons of WHA play.

As the WHA teams merged into the NHL for the 1979-80 season, Cloutier was viewed as one of the gems of the merger. His NHL years, while not at the dominant level of his WHA days, were never the less impressive. In an injury shortened 67 games during his initial NHL season, Real scored 42 goals and 89 points, earning himself a berth in the NHL All Star game. Unfortunately, injuries played a major toll and shortened his NHL career. In 317 NHL games he scored a rather impressive 344 points. His final WHA totals saw him play in 369 games with 283 goals and 566 points. These incredible scoring totals leave no doubt that Real Cloutier was one of the greats of his era.

Worn during his 2nd season in the league, Cloutier exploded with an astounding 60 goals and 114 points while wearing this very sweater. Solid game use exists consisting of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired holes, washed out bloodstains, inner pilling, and 16 team-sewn repairs. One of the nicest styles in Quebec uniform history, this sweater features sewn on numbers and fleur-de-lis’ as well as a 3-color sewn on crest. This easily ranks among, if not the finest Cloutier gamer in the entire hobby as well as one of WHA’s true standout examples, choice!
