Description
1974-75 Serge Bernier WHA Quebec Nordiques Game Worn Jersey - Only 50-Goal Season
Lot #243
This home white dureen gamer by Maska was worn by Serge Bernier during the 1974-75 WHA season. The Philadelphia Flyers selected Bernier with the 5th overall pick in the 1967 NHL Amateur Draft and he was the first pick in franchise history. He made his NHL debut in 1968-69 and remained a Flyer for parts of 4 seasons before spending parts of 2 others with the LA Kings. Next up was the WHA, where Serge became a member of the Quebec Nordiques in 1973-74 and remained thru their expansion into the NHL, his last season coming in 1980-81. Bernier’s spectacular WHA career leaves him ranked among the all-time greats in league history. He was named the 13th greatest player in WHA history in a recognizable poll that was taken a number of years back. Serge is 6th on the all-time goals list with 230, 5th in all-time assists with 336 and was the WHA’s 4th highest scoring player with 566 career points despite having missed the leagues inaugural season. No less impressive are his WHA playoff statistics; he ranks 6th all-time in goals with 28, 4th in all-time assists with 46 and was the 3rd highest scoring player in WHA playoff history with 72 points, trailing only Bobby Hull and Mark Howe and sitting 1 point ahead of Gordie Howe. The highlight of his career was being named playoff MVP in 1977, as he helped his Quebec Nordiques to their only Avco Cup championship in a grueling 7-game final series. Bernier was brilliant, leading all playoff scorers in goals, assists and points. Bernier appeared in the leagues annual All Star event in all 6 years that he played in the WHA, and thus represented Team Canada in the 1974 8-Game Series between Team Canada WHA and the Soviet Union.

Bernier set a career high with 54 goals and 122 points which were good for 2nd and 3rd respectively in league scoring in 1974-75 and also earned 2nd Team WHA All Star status for his efforts that season at Center while wearing this very sweater. Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the alternate Captain’s “A”. Sewn perfectly into the collar are the Maska and wash tags. The game wear on this stunning dureen is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired holes, heavy inner pilling and 3 team-sewn repairs. This desirable one-year style features “Quebec” printed on both shoulder fleur di lis’ with the city name Quebec contained therein, a treat for collectors. A tremendous offering that was worn by one of the WHA’s all-time greats during the finest season of his illustrious career, choice!
