1974-75 Pierre Guite & Ed Johnstone WHA Michigan Stags Game Worn Jersey – Guite All Star Season – Johnstone Rookie - Photo Match
Lot #16

This road red dureen gamer by Wilson was last worn by Pierre Guite during the 1974-75 WHA season. The Detroit Red Wings selected Guite in the 2nd round of the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. After playing his collegiate hockey at the University of Pennsylvania, this Montreal native made his professional debut in the newly formed WHA with the Quebec Nordiques in 1972. Pierre spent parts of 3 seasons in a Nordiques uniform before joining the Michigan Stags during the 1974-75 campaign. Guite later went on to play for the Cincinnati Stingers and the Edmonton Oilers before returning to Quebec in 1977-78. He finished up his WHA playing career back in Edmonton in 1978-79. This tough guy played in all 7 WHA seasons and racked up 585 PIMS in 377 games played.

Ed Johnstone was selected in the 6th round of the 1974 NHL and WHA Amateur Drafts by the New York Rangers and Michigan Stags, respectively. This winger made his professional debut with the Michigan Stags in 1974-75 before bolting to the NHL the following season. Johnstone carved out his NHL career in front of the MSG faithful with his toothless grin, playing in New York for 7 seasons. Eddie notched a pair of 30-Goal seasons in New York and was part of the squad that went to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1979. Johnstone wrapped up his NHL career in Detroit where he spent his final 3 seasons.

Sewn into the collar of this vintage dureen is the Wilson manufacturers tag. The game wear on this size 46 sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes, fine inner pilling and team-sewn repairs. Fight abuse is also readily evident with a torn and un-repaired front collar and a stitch-popped nameplate corner, most likely at the hands of an angry opponent. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Guite wearing this exact jersey during the 1974-75 season. Johnstone wore this jersey as a rookie, playing in 23 games and racking up 43 PIMS. Guite then assumed the jersey upon his arrival to the team in December 1974, playing in just 13 games for the franchise that would relocate to Baltimore in late Januray 1975, a week after the Michigan Stags became wards of the league. Despite just arriving to Michigan a month before, Guite represented the Stags in the 1975 WHA All Star Game. A beautiful well-worn photo matched jersey from this short-lived team that existed for a mere 43 games, choice!
