1974-75 Glenn “Chico” Resch New York Islanders Game Worn Jersey – Rookie
Lot #21

This home white dureen gamer by Rawlings was worn by Glenn “Chico” Resch during the 1974-75 NHL season, his rookie year. Chico made his NHL debut with the New York Islanders in 1974 and remained on Long Island until he was dealt to Colorado in 1981. During his time on the Island he became looked upon as one of the NHL’s top goaltenders. Islanders fans will never forget Chico’s playoff heroics as a rookie in 1975, as he led his team back from 3-0 series deficits two straight times to force game 7’s before falling to the Stanley Cup Champion Flyers in the Semi-Finals. After leaving New York, Resch spent parts of two seasons with the Colorado Rockies and then four more with he New Jersey Devils. Resch wrapped up his goaltending career in Philadelphia in 1986-87. In addition to winning the 1980 Stanley Cup, Chico won the 1981-82 Bill Masterton Trophy, was twice a 2nd team NHL All Star and played in 3 NHL All Star Games.

Resch dazzled as a rookie, taking over the starting reigns during the season and then leading the Islanders to some incredible playoff victories. No Islanders fan will ever forget the team making history as they stunned the Rangers in Sudden Death OT at MSG in the Prelims and then overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Penguins in the Quarter Finals. Amazingly the Isles overcame another 3-0 deficit against Philadelphia before falling in Game 7 of the Semi Finals in just their third season as a franchise!

The game wear on this size 48 sweater is solid and consists of stick and puck marks, plenty of goal post and crossbar paint transfer, fine inner pilling and a couple of team-sewn repairs. Shown above is a beautiful image of Chico taken during the 1975 Quarter Finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Removed from the upper verso and lost to history is the nameplate, which you can see the Islanders wearing during their historic 1975 playoff run. Also worthy of mention is the removal of the Islanders crest. As history has shown, complete sets of Islanders tie-downs were sent to their CHL affiliate, the Fort Worth Texans due to budgetary constraints. It is one of the reasons that Chico’s Islanders jerseys have been such a tough find for collectors over the years. This is in fact the first time that we’ve had the pleasure of presenting one of Resch’s New York Islanders game worn jerseys at auction. This stunning rookie sweater is a magnificent and important piece of New York Islanders game worn history, choice!
