1974-75 Dean Boylan & Doug Volmar WHA San Diego Mariners Game Worn Jersey - Inaugural Season - The Twin Cities WHA Find
Lot #28

This fresh to the hobby example is part of an exciting find of newly discovered WHA jerseys that were recently sourced from the Twin Cities. This collection is being offered to the hobby for the first time via the Fall 2019 Auction, exclusively at GAMEWORNAUCTIONS.NET.

This road orange knit gamer by Wilson was worn by Dean Boylan and Doug Volmar during the 1974-75 WHA season, the San Diego Mariners inaugural year. Boylan was born in Boston, MA and played three seasons of college hockey at Yale University. This enforcer made his professional debut in 1973-74 with the WHA’s New York Golden Blades and also played for the Jersey Knights after the franchise was moved during the season. Boylan played much of the 1974-75 season with the NAHL’s Syracuse Blazers before getting a call up to the San Diego Mariners. This tough guy finished his playing career a couple of seasons later after spending two years with the Philadelphia Firebirds. During his 298 game professional career, Boylan racked up an impressive 806 PIMS.

Volmar played his college hockey at Michigan State University before spending a season with the US National Team. During that time Volmar scored 53 goals in 45 games and then represented Team USA at the 1968 Olympics where he scored 5 goals in 7 games. This Cleveland, OH native made his NHL debut in 1969-70 with the Detroit Red Wings where he played for three seasons before playing a year with the LA Kings. Volmar retired after playing the 1974-75 season with the NAHL’s Syracuse Blazers and the WHA’s San Diego Mariners.

Sewn perfectly into the collar of this gamer is the Wilson tag. Sewn to the right shoulder is the San Diego Mariners team logo. Light but obvious game wear exists on this size 46 sweater with stick and slash marks and nice inner pilling most worthy of mention. A custom coin fight strap has been removed from high between the back player numbers, most certainly used by Boylan the enforcer. The Mariners originally issued this jersey to Doug Volmar whose player name was later removed by the team and replaced with the current surname Boylan, following his call-up from the Syracuse Blazers. This colorful example sat unbeknownst to us all since leaving the ice some 45 years ago and was worn by both a US Olympic star and an enforcer during the San Diego Mariners inaugural season. This fresh to the hobby offering is one of six recently discovered WHA game worn jerseys that are part of the exciting Twin Cities WHA Collection, choice!
