1974-75 Al McLeod WHA Phoenix Roadrunners Game Worn Jersey Inaugural Season Defenseman of the Year
Lot #44

This road blue mesh gamer by Champion was worn by Al McLeod during the 1974-75 WHA season, the Roadrunners inaugural year. After playing his college hockey at Michigan Tech University, this native of Medicine Hat made his NHL debut in 1973-74 with the Detroit Red Wings. The Phoenix Roadrunners lured McLeod to the WHA the following season. McLeod spent five years in the WHA and represented the Roadrunners, Houston Aeros and Indianapolis Racers before retiring following the league’s collapse after the 1978-79 season.

Sewn perfectly into the collar of this gamer is the Champion manufacturers size tagging. The sleeves on this jersey have been custom shortened for McLeod by the team. The game wear on this size 46 sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, stitch pops, fine inner pilling and a couple of handfuls of team-sewn repairs. The original garter style fight strap remains sewn to the back-player number while the nameplate has been lost to history. McLeod was named the Roadrunners defenseman of the year as voted by his teammates for his efforts while wearing this sweater during road games. A well-worn example from the Phoenix Roadrunners inaugural WHA season.
