1973-75 Ed Westfall New York Islanders Game Worn Jersey
Lot #7

This home white dureen gamer by Rawlings was worn by Ed Westfall circa the 1973-75 NHL seasons. Ed Westfall made his NHL debut in 1961-62 with the Boston Bruins. There he remained for 11 seasons, winning two Stanley Cups while playing alongside Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Johnny Bucyk and the rest of the Big Bad Bruins. After being left unprotected following his second Stanley Cup title in three seasons, the New York Islanders chose Westfall in the 1972 Expansion Draft. Eddie spent the final 7 years of his NHL career with the Islanders where he provided a steadying influence and served as their Team Captain from 1972-77. Westfall won the 1977 Bill Masterton Trophy and played in four NHL All Star games, representing both Boston and the Islanders, spanning 1971-75. Westfall was inducted into the New York Islanders Hall of Fame in 2011.

Removed from the left breast of this gamer was the Captain’s “C”, which the outiline is clearly visible. The game wear on this size 50 sweater is solid and consists of numerous stick and slash marks, many board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, trauma, fine inner pilling and a team-sewn repair. The original old school loop style fight strap is sewn to the back just beneath Eddie’s familiar player number 18 while the original crest is indeed a treat worthy of mention. The Captain’s “C” was the narrow-elongated version that, combined with the crest and number placement, helped date this remarkable jersey. The 1974 Ed Westfall hockey card shown above may well be the jersey being offered, the overall clarity of which prevented us from conclusively photo matching it. To our knowledge, this is the only home white Eddie Westfall Islanders game worn jersey to ever appear at major Auction. Recalling the chants of Ed-die, Ed-die that echoed through the Nassau Coliseum during all of the 1970’s is enough to bring chills down any die-hard Islanders fan’s spine. A truly amazing find that was worn extensively by Islanders’ Hall of Famer and original Team Captain during the very early years of their existence as an NHL franchise. The incredibly rare original crest and fantastic game use makes this nearly half-century old gem most worthy of both your attention and collection, choice!
