This home white dureen gamer by Rawlings was worn by Dave Lewis circa the 1973-74 or 1974-75 NHL season. The New York Islanders selected Lewis in the 3rd round of the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft. Lewis made his NHL debut in 1973-74 with the Islanders where he played for 7 seasons. Dave went on to represent the Los Angeles Kings, New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings before retiring following a 15-year NHL career. Following his playing days, Lewis worked behind the NHL benches, mainly in Detroit for 19 seasons. During that time, he won three Stanley Cups as a member of the Red Wings.
Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the Captain’s “C”. The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, washed out bloodstains, inner pilling and more than two-dozen team-sewn repairs. A nice custom fight strap exists on the inside and plenty of fight abuse is evident with heavy collar damage and repair work.
The New York Islanders recycled their game jerseys from the early years to their farm team, the Fort Worth Texans. In addition to the standard crest change, this example underwent a number change from 25 to 15. The Captain’s “C” was added by the Texans. Former Islanders 1st round draft choice Alex McKendry wore the player number 15 for Fort Worth during his time with the club from 1976-79. McKendry mixed it up plenty during his time with the Texans in the 1970’s. In 196 games played, McKendry amassed 430 PIMS with a career single season best of 202 coming in 59 games during 1978-79. A terrific vintage offering, complete with the coveted letter of honor and worn by three-time Stanley Cup Champion Dave Lewis during the Islanders second or third NHL season before heading to the Texans where it underwent plenty additional game action and obvious fight abuse.
