Description
1973-75 Billy Harris New York Islanders Game Worn Jersey
Lot #22

This home white dureen gamer by Rawlings was worn by Billy Harris during the 1973-74 NHL season and most likely during the 1974-75 season as well. The New York Islanders selected Harris with the 1st overall pick in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft, thereby making him the first official player in franchise history. This talented RW spent the first 8 years of his 12-year NHL career with the Islanders. He finished 3rd in Calder Trophy voting in 1972-73 for NHL Rookie of the Year, leading the hapless Islanders in most of their offensive categories. Billy was one of the keys to the Islanders uprising in the memorable 1975 playoff run that fell a win short of the Stanley Cup Finals. This 30-Goal scorer was the centerpiece required to pry Butch Goring away from the LA Kings at the trade deadline in 1980, causing Billy to miss out on the Dynasty that soon followed. Harris represented the New Yorkers in the 1976 NHL All Star Game.

Removed from the left breast of this gamer is the alternate Captain’s “A”. The game wear on this size 50 sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer from the Nassau Coliseum, un-repaired burn holes, heavy inner pilling and in excess of a dozen team-sewn repairs. The collar on this jersey has been torn down to the crest and a custom skate lace fight strap resides on the inside. Removed from the upper verso is the TV nameplate. A crest change is also worthy of mention. Harris is seen regularly wearing an “A” during the 1974-75 season, leading us to speculate that Billy also wore this jersey during one of the more memorable and important years in Islanders history. Early Islanders tie downs are a hobby rarity and have been an extremely tough get for hobbyists. Furthermore, this is the only time we can recall seeing a Billy Harris NY Islanders jersey at Auction! This beautiful example was worn by the Islanders 1st ever draft choice during his 2nd NHL season and likely again during the Islanders rise from obscurity in 1975, choice!
