Lot #509
The Los Angeles Kings selected Smith in the 5th round of the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. Smith made his NHL debut with LA in 1971-72, playing in 5 games with the Kings. The following season Smith became an original member of the expansion New York Islanders where he went on to carve out a Hall of Fame career. “Battlin’ Billy” spent the next 17 seasons representing the Islanders between the pipes. During that time Smith became a member of the 300 Win club, played in the NHL All Star Game and was named 1st Team NHL All Star. He won the 1981-82 Vezina Trophy and captured the William M. Jennings Trophy the following year.

Most impressive however was Billy’s playoff acumen. It was a decision by Hall of Fame coach Al Arbour to cease rotating his netminders early on in the 1980 playoffs that jump started one of the greatest runs in sports history. Arbour named Smith as the team’s #1 and Billy carried the Islanders to 5 straight Stanley Cup Finals as they won a record 19 consecutive playoff series and earned dynasty status by capturing 4 Cups in a row beginning in 1980. Smith earned the 1983 Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP and led the NHL in playoff victories for 5 consecutive seasons. He retired as the NHL’s winningest playoff goalie with 88 victories, a total that still places him 5th all time. This fierce competitor is still looked upon by most as the greatest money goaltender in NHL history.

This 1973-74 Topps autographed rookie card is in beautiful condition and the signature is a 10.
