1973-74 Pat Stapleton WHA Chicago Cougars Game Issued Jersey
Lot #65

This road gold dureen jersey by Wilson was issued for Pat Stapleton during the 1973-74 WHA season. Stapleton made his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins in 1961-62 but built his legend in Chicago where he played for the Blackhawks for 8 seasons and helped them to a pair of Stanley Cup Finals. During that time Stapleton was among the leagues best defenseman as evidenced by his 4 NHL All Star Game appearances and three 2nd Team NHL All Star selections.

After falling just shy of winning the Stanley Cup in 1973, the Rebel League came calling and Pat journeyed across town and joined the Chicago Cougars. Stapleton spent the final five years of his playing career in the WHA, playing in the annual All Star Game in each of those five seasons. Stapleton won the Dennis A. Murphy Trophy, the WHA’s version of the Norris Trophy, as the WHA’s top defenseman in his first year in the league. This five-time WHA All Star also earned a 1st and 2nd Team WHA All Star selection during his illustrious career. After the Cougars folded, Stapleton spent two seasons with the Indianapolis Racers and a final year with the Cincinnati Stingers.

Proudly sewn to the right breast of this jersey is the Captain’s “C”. Sewn into the hem is the chain stitched “73” year tag. The player numbers are sewn to the front, back and sleeves of this jersey while best of all is a magnificent yellow and green chain stitched Cougar that sits atop a green tackle twill crest. A nice memento from the WHA’s early years.
