McCreary, as a member of the Canadiens organization, played mostly in the minor leagues with the exception of 10 games in the NHL over 7 seasons. He joined the expansion Pittsburgh Penguins for their inaugural season of 1967-68 and played with Pittsburgh until he was claimed by the Atlanta Flames in the 1972 expansion draft. Keith became the Flames very first Captain. Keith scored 20+ goals 3 times in his NHL career with a high of 25 with the Penguins in 1968-69. McCreary died after a long bout with cancer on December 9, 2003, he was 63.
