Description
1973-74 Jim Watson WHA Chicago Cougars Game Worn Jersey & Socks
Lot #17
This vintage Chicago Cougars game worn jersey is being offered to the hobby for the very first time. Our consignor lived right behind the Carol Stream, IL hockey rink that was owned by Cougars player Pat Stapleton. After the Cougars disbanded in 1975, our consignor’s wife acquired Jim Watson’s jersey and socks at the rink and gifted them to her husband, our consignor as a Christmas present. He has cherished them ever since, keeping them impeccably preserved.

This road gold dureen gamer by Wilson was worn by Jim Watson during the 1973-74 WHA season. Watson was a journeyman NHL defenseman who began his career in 1963-64 with Detroit, his home for 6 seasons. Jimmy next suited up for the expansion Buffalo Sabres, spending 2 years with the club before joining the WHA. Watson was an inaugural member of the WHA playing for the Los Angeles Sharks for parts of 2 years and the Chicago Cougars for parts of 2 more before playing a final season for the Quebec Nordiques. Watson wasn’t shy to mix things up as needed, compiling a number of triple digit PIMS seasons throughout his career.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the Wilson tag. Sewn into the hem is a chain-stitched ‘73’ year tag. The game wear on this size 48 sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, heavy inner pilling and a couple of handfuls of team-sewn repairs. The original old school garter and loop style fight strap resides sewn to the back player number while the intricately stitched crest is a sight to behold. Watson was acquired by Chicago mid-season from the LA Sharks, which helps explain the nameplate change on the verso. Being packed with incredible provenance and having just a single owner for the past 40+ years only adds to the incredible appeal of this well-worn fresh to the hobby WHA example, choice! This lot will include the Cougars game worn socks as well.
