Description
1973-74 Jacques Richard Atlanta Flames Autographed Card - Deceased
Lot #508
After and incredible juniors career with the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL, Richard was drafted by the Atlanta Flames 2nd overall in the 1972 NHL Entry Draft. So impressive was his juniors career, that some hockey experts considered him to have equal if not more NHL potential than his teammate Guy Lafleur. Richard started his NHL career with the Flames in 1972-73 and played 3 seasons in Atlanta. He would spend the next 8 seasons playing with the Sabres and Nordiques with brief stretches in the AHL as well. Richard’s one brilliant season came in 1980-81, while playing in Quebec. Playing on a line with the Stastny brothers, Richard scored 52 goals, 51 assists and had 103 points. This was to be the only season Richard would show the potential that the experts saw in him.

It was long thought that Richard had a drinking problem, which hurt his career. While playing in Buffalo, Richard was arrested for driving while intoxicated. On another occasion he was forced to miss a game due to a sprained wrist suffered during a bar fight and he barely missed being shot in a Quebec bar as the bullet when through his pant leg. In 1989, Richard was arrested for attempting to smuggle $1.5 million worth of cocaine into Canada, for which he was sentenced to 7 years in prison. On October 8, 2002, driving home from his 50th birthday party, Richard was killed when he drove his car into a drain. The card is in beautiful condition and the signature is a 10.
