1973-74 Gilbert Perreault Sabres Autographed Topps Card
Lot #410

Gilbert spent 17 seasons wearing the Sabres blue and gold and was the 1st overall selection of the franchise in 1970. He proved the perfect choice to build a team around and had a career that ranks him among the all-time greats. Perreault won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 1971. He was the recipient of the Lady Byng Trophy in 1973 for the combination of sportsmanship and high ability. Gilbert was twice a 2nd team NHL All Star and partook in 5 NHL All Star games. He was a member of Team NHL in the 1979 Challenge Cup and represented Team Canada in the 1972 Summitt Series as well as the 1976, and 1981 Canada Cups. His stellar play in the 1981 series, which saw him net 3 goals and 6 assists in 4 games, landed him a nomination to the 1981 Canada Cup All Star team.

Gilbert’s career spanned 1191 regular season games. He tallied 512 goals and 814 assists, good for 1326 points. Add
another 103 playoff points to his resume, 21 of which occurred during the 1979-80 season in a spectacular 14 game run by the Sabres that saw them fall just shy of the Stanley Cup Finals. Gilbert did lead his team to the Finals in 1975 where Buffalo fell to the Broad Street Bullies in a hard fought 6 game series. During his prime, Gilbert artistically led his linemates Richard Martin and Rene Robert to be coined the French Connection, which to this day is still considered among hockeys greatest lines of all time. He rightfully sits as a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame alongside the best to ever play the sport.
