1973-74 Denis Potvin New York Islanders Game Worn Jersey Rookie - Calder Trophy - All Star Season - Photo Match
Lot #9

This home white dureen gamer by Rawlings was worn by Denis Potvin during the 1973-74 NHL season, his rookie year. The New York Islanders selected Potvin with the 1st overall pick in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft. He began his career on Long Island in 1973-74 and won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year in the spring of 1974. Potvin spent his entire 15-year NHL career as a member of the Islanders. During that time he played in 1060 games and scored 310 goals and 1052 points. His playoff totals are no less impressive with 164 points in 185 games played. Potvin recorded three different 30-Goal seasons and also eclipsed the 100-point mark during his illustrious career. Denis is considered one of the NHL’s all-time great defenseman. He won three Norris Trophies from 1976 thru 1979 and retired as the NHL’s all-time leader in goals, assists and points among defenseman, both in the regular season and playoffs. Denis was a 7-time 1st or 2nd Team NHL All Star who appeared in 9 NHL All Star Games. Potvin became the Captain of the Islanders in 1979-80 and immediately thereafter led the team to 5 consecutive Stanley Cup Finals, hoisting the Cup 4 straight times from 1980-83 as the team earned dynasty status in the process. Internationally, Potvin represented Team Canada in the 1976 and 1981 Canada Cups.

The game wear on this size 48 sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, colorful board paint transfer from the Nassau Coliseum, un-repaired burn holes and heavy inner pilling. Shown above are some beautiful photo matches of Potvin wearing this exact jersey during the 1973-74 season. Take note of the heavy stick mark and subsequent trauma to the right elbow area on the right sleeve in the orange as well as the stick work above the crest and the uniquely pinched sleeve numbers that provide perfect photo matches! This series of photos provide matches dating from October 1973 all the way thru March 1974, showing that Potvin wore this jersey throughout his entire rookie season. A custom fight strap is affixed to the inside back player number. The original Islanders crest was removed from this sweater. History suggests that this entire set of sweaters was sent down to the Islanders minor league affiliate, the Fort Worth Texans of the CHL for their inaugural season of 1974-75. The Texans crest was later removed and an Islanders crest was sewn back onto this jersey. It is unclear if this jersey was sent back to the Islanders after its time at Fort Worth. Of interest, research does confirm that the Islanders wore a non-blue backed crest on home ice for a period of time circa 1976; however we have not yet been able to find photo matches of Potvin wearing this exact sweater during the mid 1970’s era. Potvin was magnificent as a rookie while wearing this jersey in front of the hometown fans on Long Island, scoring 17 goals and adding 37 assists for 54 points to go along with a career best 175 PIMS! For his efforts, in addition to Rookie of the Year honors, Potvin earned his first of 9 NHL All Star Game appearances. Worn throughout Potvin’s Calder Trophy winning season, this photo-matched example is now 45-years removed from the ice and would make a tremendous addition to any Hall of Fame collection, choice!
