1973-74 Brian Coates WHA Chicago Cougars Game Worn Jersey
Lot #19

This road gold dureen gamer by Wilson was worn by Brian Coates during the 1973-74 WHA season. The Boston Bruins selected Coates in the 5th round of the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. After spending the 1972-73 season with the Bruins AHL affiliate in Boston and also with Cape Cod in the EHL, Brian signed on with the WHA’s Chicago Cougars in 1973-74. Coates was a veteran of 5 WHA seasons, spending two with Chicago, two more with the Indianapolis Racers and one final WHA season with the Cincinnati Stingers.

The Chicago Cougars headed into the 1974 playoffs as gigantic underdogs. In the Eastern Division Semi-Finals they defeated the heavily favored defending Avco Cup Champion New England Whalers in 7 games. Next up they squared off with the Toronto Toros in the Eastern Division Finals. In yet another hard-fought 7 game series, Chicago dispatched the heavily favored Toros earning their right to play for WHA glory. Chicago’s Cinderella run came to an end as they ran into Gordie Howe’s Houston Aeros who handily defeated the Cougars in 4 straight to win the Avco Cup.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the Wilson manufacturers tag. Sewn into the hem is the chain stitched “73” year tag. The game wear on this size 46 sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, material pulls, stitch pops, heavy inner pilling and team-sewn repair work including a heavy sew-job running from the collar to the crest. The player numbers are sewn to the front, back and sleeves of this gamer while best of all is a magnificent yellow and green chain stitched Cougar that sits atop a green tackle twill crest. The green lettering of the surname is heat pressed to a nameplate that lies above the outline of a prior plate while the original garter style fight strap is sewn to the inside back player number. Coates wore this beautiful sweater on the road during Chicago’s magical 1973-74 season that saw them compete against Gordie Howe for the 1974 Avco Cup, choice!
