1972-73 Rene Robert Buffalo Sabres Game Worn Jersey - All Star Season - Career Best 40-Goal Season
Lot #17

This road blue dureen gamer by Rawlings and Al Deckdebrun was worn by Rene Robert during the 1972-73 NHL season, his first full season with the Buffalo Sabres. Robert made his NHL debut with a 5-game stint in 1970-71 with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He played most of the following season with the Pittsburgh Penguins before being acquired by the Buffalo Sabres prior to the 1972 trade deadline. On March 4, 1972 the Sabres had put the third and final piece in place to form the French Connection, acquiring Robert from Pittsburgh in exchange for Eddie Shack. The 1972-73 season saw Robert catapult into national stardom as he struck for 40 goals and scored 83 points, earning his first NHL All Star Game appearance. Just two seasons later, Robert and the Sabres had their best season as a franchise, making a run to the Stanley Cup Finals before falling to the defending Stanley Cup Champion Flyers. Robert lit the lamp 40 times and added 60 assists for 100 points that magical year, earning a 2nd Team NHL All Star selection in the process. Robert’s career spanned 12 seasons, playing for the Sabres in 8 of them before finishing up his career with Colorado and Toronto. In forming the right side of one of hockey’s all-time great lines, this RW showcased blazing speed and a deadly shot to find his place in the hearts of the Buffalo faithful. This two-time NHL All Star’s player #14 has been retired to the rafters in Buffalo, where it resides alongside his French Connection line mates, Gilbert Perreault and Rick Martin.

Sewn into the hem of this gamer is the Rawlings and Al Deckdebrun tagging. The game wear on this size 44 sweater is solid and consists of stick marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes, heavy inner pilling and a couple of handfuls of team-sewn repairs. Robert was magnificent in 1972-73 during his first full season with the Sabres. He scored 40 goals and 83 points, earning an NHL All Star appearance for his efforts while wearing this sweater during road games. Collectors know how difficult obtaining a Robert Sabres jersey has been, with a scant few examples known to the hobby. To our knowledge, this is the only blue Buffalo Sabres jersey of Robert’s to ever appear at Major Auction. A wonderful French Connection example that was worn by Robert during his first full season in Buffalo as he scored a career best 40 goals and played in his first NHL All Star Game, choice!
