1972-73 Philadelphia Blazers Salesman Sample/Prototype Jersey
Lot #90

This salesman sample/prototype jersey was acquired by our consignor from his uncle, who acquired it from his best friend, Pierre Cournoyer. Cournoyer, who played 38 Games with the Roanoke Valley Rebels in 1972-73, played in the preseason with the Philadelphia Blazers. While our consignor believes it is possible Cournoyer wore this jersey in the Blazers pre-season, we cannot confirm this and, as such, are listing it as a salesman sample/prototype.

This beautiful dureen tie-down jersey by Maska was produced as a salesman sample/prototype, but never used, by the WHA’s Philadelphia Blazers. The story of the Blazers franchise begins in Miami of all places. Granted franchise life in November 1971, the Miami Screaming Eagles would never actually play a WHA game. Despite this, the Screaming Eagles would make major WHA news by luring goalie Bernie Parent away from the NHL. Parent was the first star player to defect to the rival league. The team’s next NHL target was Boston Bruins fan favorite Derek Sanderson, who was more than intrigued by the Miami offer. A deal wasn’t yet completed when, in April of 1972, Miami withdrew from the league due to the lack of a suitable arena among other financial reasons. In June, just a couple of months later, the Philadelphia Blazers were formed replacing the Miami franchise and thus assuming Bernie Parent’s contract.

This vintage dureen has the original Maska tag in the collar. While very close in appearance to the jerseys the Blazers actually wore, this jersey does not have the white piping on the shoulders.
