1972-73 Duke Harris & Pierre Viau WHA Chicago Cougars Game Worn Jersey - Inaugural Season - The Twin Cities WHA Find
Lot #26

This fresh to the hobby example is part of an exciting find of newly discovered WHA jerseys that were recently sourced from the Twin Cities. This collection is being offered to the hobby for the first time via the Fall 2019 Auction, exclusively at GAMEWORNAUCTIONS.NET.

This home white knit gamer by Rawlings and Gunzo’s was worn by Pierre Viau during the 1972-73 WHA season, the Chicago Cougars inaugural year. This sweater was then prepared for use and possibly worn by newly acquired George “Duke” Harris during the 1973-74 pre-season. Harris enjoyed a lengthy professional career that began back in 1961-62 in the EPHL. This RW made his NHL debut in 1967-68 where he played with both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Minnesota North Stars that expansion season. Duke was an original member of the WHA’s Houston Aeros where he scored 30 goals in the WHA’s inaugural season before playing his final two professional seasons with the Chicago Cougars of the WHA.

Pierre Viau played his junior hockey in the early 1970’s in the QMJHL before embarking on a brief professional career that saw him play for the WHA’s Chicago Cougars in 1972-73 during their inaugural season. This defenseman also spent time in the EHL and then wrapped up his playing days with the NAHL’s Johnstown Jets.

Sewn perfectly into the hem of this gamer are the Rawlings and Gunzo’s patches. The game wear on this size 46 sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer and inner pilling. The player numbers are sewn to the front, back and sleeves of this gamer while best of all is a magnificent yellow and green chain stitched Cougar that sits atop a green tackle twill crest. The green lettering of the surname Harris is heat pressed to a nameplate that lies above the outline of a prior stunted plate that once bore the name Viau. This still vibrant example hails from the WHA’s inaugural season and has sat unbeknownst to us all since leaving the ice some 47 years ago. This fresh to the hobby offering is one of six recently discovered WHA game worn jerseys that are part of the exciting Twin Cities WHA Collection, choice!
