1972-73 Chris Meloff WHA Ottawa Nationals Game Worn Jersey Inaugural WHA Season Photo Match
Lot #30

This home white dureen gamer by Maska was worn by Chris Meloff during the 1972-73 WHA season, the league’s inaugural year. The Minnesota North Stars selected Meloff in the 7th round of the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. This Toronto native made his professional debut in the WHA in 1972-73 during the league’s inaugural season. Chris played in 28 games for the Ottawa Nationals, which encompassed the entirety of his WHA career. This defenseman later went on to play in the AHL and NAHL before retiring.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the Maska manufacturers tagging. The game wear on this sweater consists of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes and trauma, stitch pops, inner pilling and a couple of team-sewn repairs. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Meloff wearing this exact jersey during the 1972-73 season. Also worthy of mention is the original tie string that remains sewn through the eyelets while the nameplate has sadly been lost to history. Meloff played in just 28 games, scoring 7 points and adding 40 PIMS while wearing this sweater on home ice. The Ottawa Nationals existed only during the WHA’s inaugural season, playing their home games at the undersized Ottawa Civic Centre. Financial limitations eventually led to a sale by the Nationals co-owners to a group of Toronto based investors, ultimately giving birth to the Toronto Toros. This terrific photo matched example roamed the rink during the WHA’s first year of play and would make a nice addition to any WHA collection, choice!
