1972-73 Bill Flett Philadelphia Flyers Game Worn Jersey - Photo Match
Lot #6
This home white knit gamer was worn by “Cowboy” Bill Flett during the 1972-73 NHL season. Flett began his NHL career as a member of the expansion Los Angeles Kings in 1967-68. Flett spent parts of 5 seasons in LA before a multi-player trade sent him to Philadelphia during the 1971-72 season. In 1972-73, Flett’s first full season with the Flyers, he set career best totals of 43 goals and 31 assists for 74 points in just 69 games played, helping teammate Bobby Clarke capture the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s MVP. The 1973-74 season saw the Flyers shock the hockey world as they defeated the heavily favored Boston Bruins to become the first expansion team to win Lord Stanley’s Cup. It turned out to be the only Stanley Cup win for “Cowboy”. The following off-season saw the Flyers find a new line mate for Clarke and Barber as they acquired Reggie Leach, thus making Flett expendable. Flett spent the 1974-75 season with the Maple Leafs and then spent the 1975-76 season with the Atlanta Flames. In 1976-77, the Edmonton Oilers of the WHA came calling and lured Flett away from the NHL. He spent the next several years with the Oilers before retiring during the 1979-80 NHL season. Sadly, this beloved figure lost his life back in 1999 at the age of 55.

The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, stitch pops, heavy inner pilling and some team-sewn repair work to the back left shoulder seam. A further treat is the all-original nameplate that remains sewn perfectly to the verso! Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Flett wearing this exact jersey during the 1972-73 season. Perfectly matched is all of the unique stitching and threads that surround the Flyers crest. Flett wore this sweater during his career best year, as he helped line mate Bobby Clarke win his first Hart Trophy as NHL MVP. Flett donned this gamer on home ice at the Spectrum in Philadelphia and set career highs in Goals 43, Assists 31 and Points 74 in just 69 games played. Also shared above is a telling quote from Flyers Hall of Fame coach Fred Shero regarding Flett’s 1972-73 season. Best of all, this amazing jersey is completely fresh to the hobby, having been in the hands of our consignor since being removed from the ice some 40+ years ago! An absolutely incredible well-worn, photo matched offering from “Cowboy” Bill Flett’s finest NHL season, which is now being offered to the hobby for the very first time, choice!
