1970-71 Red Kelly Signed Training Camp Letter to Duffie Lewis
Lot #861
This 1970-71 letter from Red Kelly to Duffie Lewis has been beautifully matted and framed. It was written on August 19, 1970 to inform Duffie of the upcoming training camp for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kelly was the coach of the Penguins from 1969-70 into the 1972-73 season. He was also the GM from May of 1970 – January of 1972.

This interesting piece of hockey history shows how different things are in today’s NHL. After telling Duffie the time and place of the camp, Red goes on to say “I expect the up-coming season to be even tougher than the last year, especially since Chicago is in our division, and it is of the utmost importance that we get off to a very good start. Therefore, I expect that when you arrive in Camp, you should be prepared to do 25 push-ups, 25 sit-ups and 25 knee-bends”. We bet you won’t be seeing that in any letters to players in the modern day! And to top it all off, his P.S. is “Please bring your running shoes with you”.
