This home orange dureen gamer by General Athletic and Pearson Sporting Goods was worn by Joe Watson during the 1970-71 NHL season. This native of Smithers, BC began his NHL career as a member of the Boston Bruins in 1964-65. Joe spent a couple of years on the Boston blueline before becoming an original member of the expansion Philadelphia Flyers in 1967. He served valiantly as a member of the Broad Street Bullies for 11 years before spending a final season with the Colorado Rockies. Watson, who played alongside his brother Jimmy on the Flyers defense, went to 3 consecutive Stanley Cup Finals from 1974-76 and walked away with a pair of rings under the guidance of legendary coach Fred Shero.
Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the Pearson and size tagging. Sewn into the hem is the General Athletic tag. Sewn to the verso is the original old school garter and loop style fight strap. The game wear on this size 48 sweater consists of stick marks, board burns, washed out bloodstains and inner pilling. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Watson wearing this exact jersey. These vintage pre-Cup era Flyers jerseys are exceedingly difficult to find, with the Stanley Cup winning Broad Street Bullies members being especially cherished by collectors. This 45+ year old, all original photo matched example would make a wonderful addition for any Philadelphia Flyers collector, choice!
