1969-71 Rich Coutu Rosemont National Game Worn Jersey - QMJHL Inaugural Season
Lot #206

This rare gold dureen gamer with blue trimming was worn by Rich Coutu during the 1969-70 and 1970-71 QMJHL seasons, the first two seasons of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Minnesota North Stars selected Coutu in the 10th round of the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. After playing two seasons of junior hockey with Rosemont National, this Goalie went on to a 5-year professional career that included 3 seasons in the WHA where he backstopped both the Chicago Cougars and Cincinnati Stingers before retiring in 1976.

Rosemont National was one of the founding clubs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and existed for merely two seasons, playing their home games at the Paul Sauve Arena in the suburbs of Montreal. After two seasons of play shakeups were underway in the QMJHL. Rosemont moved their operations to Laval and became the Laval Nationals, replacing the Laval Saints who had folded. The franchise prospered in Laval where they played for 27 seasons in the QMJHL, eventually becoming the Laval Voisins and later the more well known Laval Titans whose alumni include Hall of Famers Mario Lemieux and Mike Bossy.

The game wear on this sweater consists of stick and puck marks, paint transfer, un-repaired holes, a couple of runs, heavy cuff wear, material pulls and inner pilling. The all-sewn crest is a sight to behold, trimmed in blue and yellow with a black “R” for Rosemont sitting just atop. Coutu wore this stunning sweater during the QMJHL’s first two seasons while facing an onslaught between the pipes. His stellar play tied him in the voting with Hall of Famer Billy Smith to earn inaugural 2nd Team QMJHL All Star honors while wearing this sweater. Rosemont National gamers are prized among junior collectors, with this being the only example we’ve ever seen come to Auction. This rare jersey, worn by this former WHA Goaltender, is nearly 50 years removed from the ice and would become an instant centerpiece in any serious old-school junior hockey collection, choice!
