1968 Joe Niekro Chicago Cubs Game Worn Jersey 3rd Party Authentication Letter 2nd Major League Season
Lot #627

This home white pinstripe jersey by Wilson was worn by knuckleballer Joe Niekro while playing with the Chicago Cubs in 1968, his 2nd season in the majors. Niekro, the younger brother of Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 1966 MLB Amateur Draft, but did not sign with the club. The Cubs then drafted him in June of the following year. He joined the Cubs for the 1967 season and was a 10-game winner. Niekro had a 22-year baseball career, playing for the Cubs, Padres, Tigers, Braves, Astros, Yankees and Twins. When he retired following the 1988 season, he had 221 Wins and a career ERA of 3.59. He was a 20-game winner in back-to-back seasons with the Astros in 1979 and 1980, leading the league in 1979 with 21 Wins and 5 Shutouts. He was a member of the 1979 National League All Star team and won the 1987 World Series with the Twins. Sadly, Joe passed away of a brain aneurysm in October of 2006.

This home white pinstripe jersey has the manufactures and size 42 tag on the front hem. Below that is the 1968 set 1 tag. In the neck it is chain stitched “48-68-1-42” denoting the player number, year, set and size. On the right sleeve is the State of Illinois sesquicentennial “150 year anniversary” patch. The original Cubs crest was removed when it was sent down to the minors, most likely Tacoma. The Tacoma crest was then removed and another original Cubs crest was then applied. This jersey will be accompanied by a 3rd party authentication letter.
