1968-70 Marcel Dionne St. Catharines Blackhawks Game Worn Jersey - Marcel Dionne Letter
Lot #205

This spectacular game worn jersey originates from the personal collection of Hall of Famer Marcel Dionne. Since leaving the Dionne collection some 15 years ago, this jersey has had just one owner, having sat in a private collection since and will be accompanied by a letter signed by Marcel Dionne.

This road red dureen gamer by General Athletic and Gunzo’s was worn by Marcel Dionne during the 1968-69 and or the 1969-70 OHA seasons. The Detroit Red Wings selected Dionne with the 2nd overall pick in the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. After playing three seasons of junior hockey with the St. Catharines Black Hawks, Dionne made his NHL debut with Detroit in 1971-72. Following four productive seasons in Detroit, Marcel was traded to the LA Kings where he would carve out his legend over the next 12 seasons prior to finishing up his career with the New York Rangers.

Dionne’s career statistics are indeed gaudy. His 731 career goals rank him 5th on the all-time list behind only Gretzky, Howe, Jagr and Hull. Marcel ranks 10th on the all-time assists list with 1040 while his 1771 career points rank 6th all-time behind Gretzky, Jagr, Messier, Howe, and Francis. Marcel partook in 8 NHL All Star Games and is a four-time 1st or 2nd Team NHL All Star at Center. Dionne was a member of Team Canada in the 72 Summit Series, the 1976 and 1981 Canada Cups and several World Championships. He also represented Team NHL against the Soviets in the 1979 Challenge Cup. Dionne’s career saw him tab 10 different 40-goal seasons, connecting for 50 or more 6 times! His array of hardware is impressive and includes 2 Lady Byng trophies for the combination of sportsmanship and high ability, 2 Lester B. Pearson awards as the NHL’s outstanding player along with 1 Art Ross Trophy for leading the NHL in scoring. The Hockey Hall of Fame was made to honor players such as Dionne.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the Gunzo’s and size tagging. Sewn into the hem is the General Athletic tag. This jersey has been custom shortened in the hem for Dionne. The game wear on this size 46 sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes and trauma, inner pilling and a half-dozen team-sewn repairs. Sewn to the chest is the prettiest logo in all of sports, Chief Indian Head. Sewn to the shoulders are the D tomahawks, suggesting this sweater was formerly the property of the Dallas Black Hawks which is consistent with the image shown of Marcel above. Dionne wore the “C” in his final junior season helping to date this sweater to one of Marcel’s first two years with St. Catharines. Dionne enjoyed a record setting junior career, scoring 375 points in 148 games with St. Catharines and leading the league in scoring in each of his final two seasons. A spectacular well-worn customized example that came straight from the personal collection of Marcel Dionne and was kept incredibly preserved by both Marcel and our consignor over the past 50-years, choice!
