Description
1968-69 Wayne Connelly/Barry Mackenzie Minnesota North Stars/Memphis South Stars Game Worn Jersey
Lot #52

This home green dureen gamer by General Athletic and AB Sporting Goods was worn by Wayne Connelly during the 1968-69 NHL season. Connelly began his NHL career with the Montreal Canadiens in 1960-61. Wayne spent a decade in the NHL, representing the Canadiens, Bruins, North Stars, Red Wings, Blues and Canucks. Connelly netted a career best 35 goals with the expansion Minnesota North Stars in 1967-68 as he led the NHL in both power play goals and game winning goals. When the WHA was formed, Connelly joined the Minnesota Fighting Saints and became one of the WHA’s first stars as he netted 120 goals in his first 3 seasons with Minnesota. Wayne also represented Cleveland, Edmonton and Calgary on his way to becoming a top 20 goal scorer in WHA history.

Barry Mackenzie spent a total of 6 games in the NHL. They came as a member of the Minnesota North Stars in 1968-69. Following Wayne Connelly’s trade to Detroit in February 1969, Mackenzie received a call-up and wore Connelly’s player #12. Mackenzie played the remainder of his games during the 1968-69 season with Minnesota’s CHL affiliate, the Memphis South Stars. We believe that after Mackenzie was called up and subsequently sent down after failing to stick with the parent club, this sweater was sent to Memphis with him to be worn for the remainder of the season.

The game wear on this sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes and an un-repaired run right beneath the front collar. The North Stars crest has been removed and replaced with a South Stars crest, leaving a slew of team-sewn repair work and un-repaired holes in its wake. Sewn into the hem of this gamer is the General Athletic tag. The AB Sporting Goods tag no longer resides in the neck and has been lost to history.

The Memphis South Stars existed for a mere 2 seasons and their jerseys have been an impossible find. This is the first example that we’ve ever heard of in the hobby. The scarcity of a 2nd year Minnesota North Stars sweater is also well known to hobbyists, with a scant few of them known to exist. This is just the second time that we’ve ever had the pleasure of offering one at Auction. This example certainly helps to explain why finding a 2nd year North Stars gamer has proven so difficult over the past 50 years. Folks, this is a very rare jersey that is steeped in history and would display proudly on any Minnesota Wall of Fame, choice!
