1967-68 Len Lunde Minnesota North Stars Pre-Season Game Worn Jersey - Retired Number
Lot #39

This road white knit tie-down gamer by Cosby was worn by Len Lunde during the 1967-68 NHL pre-season. Lunde made his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings in 1958-59. He spent 4 seasons with the Wings before joining the Chicago Blackhawks for a couple of seasons. The Minnesota North Stars claimed Lunde in the 1967 NHL Expansion draft and he spent one season with Minnesota before joining the Vancouver Canucks. Len completed his professional career in the WHA with the Edmonton Oilers in 1973-74.

This rare jersey hails from the first-ever set of Minnesota North Stars game worn jerseys. This set of double-knit tie-neck jerseys were worn by the North Stars during the 1967-68 pre-season, as the NHL had just expanded from its original 6 to 12 clubs. This set of jerseys was quickly replaced prior to the team’s first regular season game with a set of General Athletic dureens for reasons unknown but speculation includes that they shrunk a bit too much due to washings. It is speculated that this set of jerseys wound up being recycled to the minors, quite possibly to team owner, Walter Bush’s Midwest Jr. Stars in the 1970’s.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer are the Cosby and size tagging. The original tie-lace remains sewn thru the eyelets. The game wear on this now shrunken size 46 sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes and inner pilling. Shown above is the 1967 North Stars pre-season schedule and results as well as a rare color photo depicting the North Stars first ever home and road jerseys, being modeled by Jean-Guy Talbot and Dave Balon. When viewing the color photo, take note of the unusual slanted “N” logo, a Minnesota North Stars jersey rarity and something that every North Stars collector should want in their collection! Before Mike Modano wore the North Stars now retired player #9, it first took the ice during the 1967 pre-season on this Lunde jersey! This fantastic old-school expansion era sweater just drips Minnesota North Stars hockey, has been impeccably preserved and remains in extraordinary condition, choice!
