Description
1967-68 Charlie Hodge Oakland Seals Game Worn Jersey - Inaugural Season
Lot #4
This home green dureen gamer by General Athletic was worn by goaltender Charlie Hodge during the 1967-68 NHL season, the inaugural year of the Oakland Seals. Hodge began his career with the Montreal Canadiens during the 1954-55 season and remained with the storied franchise through the 1966-67 season, taking part in Montreal’s run of 5 consecutive Stanley Cups in the late 1950’s. Charlie captured two Vezina Trophies as the NHL’s top netminder during the mid 1960’s, as he helped the Canadiens return to their Stanley Cup dominance of the late 1950’s, as Les Habitants won a couple more Stanley Cups in 1965 and 1966. When the NHL’s ‘Original 6’ expanded to 12, the Canadiens were forced to leave a goalie unprotected. Their choice was between Charlie their veteran and a baby-faced Rogie Vachon. Hodge was the choice and the expansion Oakland Seals, the team for which he would tend goal for the next three seasons, promptly selected him. Hodge’s final season came in 1970-71 when the NHL expanded once more. This time Hodge was selected by the expansion Vancouver Canucks, where he provided a veteran presence while posting surprisingly solid stats in front of a first year roster.

Hodge appeared in 58 games and posted 3 shutouts and a respectable 2.86 GAA behind a porous first year defense in Oakland while wearing this historic jersey. The game wear on this sweater is terrific and consists of stick and puck marks, smears of goal post paint transfer on the sleeves, hips and back hem, more smears of crossbar paint transfer exist on the back player number and above it just beneath the back neckline, there also exists pilling and some significant team-sewn repair work ranging from the front collar just beneath the eyelets to the hip and hem where some large material backed work has been undertaken. Sewn into the hem of this gamer is the General Athletic tag. The size tag is sewn into the collar with the word “size” still being perfectly legible and intact with the actual size number beneath it being too frayed to make out. The vintage lace remains sewn thru the eyelets while the blue, black, white and lemon and lime greens in the intricate first year crest just scream old time hockey. First year post expansion gamers have always been in high demand throughout our hobbies existence. This first year home green gamer was worn by Charlie Hodge, a two-time Vezina Trophy winning goaltender, and is without much dispute or debate the most important and valuable Oakland Seals game worn jersey extant. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we offer this incredible vintage 1st year franchise grail to the auction block, Good Luck!
