1965-67 Bill Speer & Jacques Lemieux Cleveland Barons Game Worn Jersey
Lot #207

This blue dureen gamer by Cleveland Sporting Goods and General Athletic was worn by Bill Speer and, or Jacques Lemieux during the 1965-66 and or 1966-67 AHL seasons. Speer began his professional career in the early 1960’s and became an AHL regular, representing the Springfield Indians, Cleveland Barons, Buffalo Bisons and Baltimore Clippers before making his NHL debut with the expansion Pittsburgh Penguins in 1967-68. Following two seasons with Pittsburgh, Speer spent parts of two years on the Bobby Orr led Boston Bruins blueline. Speer’s first season with the Bruins saw them capture the 1970 Stanley Cup, the only Stanley Cup Championship of Speer’s career. In 1972, the WHA came calling and Bill spent the last 2 seasons of his career playing for the New York Raiders, New York Golden Blades and Jersey Knights before retiring.

Lemieux began his career in the CPHL in 1963, and played for 3 seasons with the Omaha Knights and Houston Apollos. In 1966-67, Lemieux played for the AHL’s Cleveland Barons before making his NHL debut the following year with the expansion Los Angeles Kings. Lemieux spent parts of 3 seasons with the Kings, while otherwise playing for their AHL affiliate in Springfield or with the WHL’s Denver Spurs.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the Cleveland Sporting Goods tag along with a heavily frayed size tag. Sewn into the hem is the General Athletic tagging. The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes, a couple of material runs, material pulls, stitch pops, fine inner pilling and several team-sewn repairs. A beautiful short-lived style that was worn by at least one if not two former NHL defenseman more than 50 years ago!
