1964-65 John Brenneman & Gerry Melnyk Black Hawks Game Worn Jersey - 1-year style
Lot #15

Presented here is a rarely offered Chicago Black Hawks tie down gamer by General and Gunzos. This 1-year style combines the last year of the Hawks tie-down era with the first year of the modern era Indian Head crest. This amazing sweater was worn during the 1964-65 NHL season by both John Brenneman in the regular season and Gerry Melnyk in the playoffs.

The Hawks were frugal with their uniforms and kept jerseys around from prior seasons for use in practices if they weren’t sent to their minor league affiliate St. Catherine’s. Beginning in 1965-66, fan favorite and future Team Captain, Pat Stapleton joins the team assuming the player number 12. Therefore, it is quite possible that during his tenure with the team that Stapleton may have worn this jersey in the circumstances described.

Removed from the left breast is the alternate Captain’s “A”. The Gunzos and size tagging remain sewn into the collar while the General Athletic tag is no longer present. Game use is solid consisting of stick marks, board burns, un-repaired holes, washed out bloodstains, inner pilling and a half dozen team-sewn repairs. This rare 1-year tie down style with the beautiful hand stitched crest and shoulder tomahawks harkens one back to the bygone era of the Original 6. Awesome old style sweater.
