1962-63 Bill Hicke Montreal Canadiens Wool Game Worn Jersey - Rare One Year Style
Lot #9
This rare road white wool gamer by Tease Knitting Company was worn by Bill Hicke during the 1962-63 NHL season. Hicke made his NHL debut with the Montreal Canadiens during the 1958-59 Stanley Cup playoffs. He would spend the first 7 seasons of his 14-year NHL career with Les Habitants. Hicke broke in with perhaps hockey’s greatest Dynasty of all-time, capturing a pair of Stanley Cups on the back end of the only club to win five consecutive Stanley Cup Championships in NHL history. After leaving Montreal via trade in December 1964, Bill went on to play for the New York Rangers, Oakland and California Seals and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Hicke’s last season was spent with the Alberta Oilers in 1972-73 during the WHA’s inaugural season. Hicke was a 3-time NHL All Star as a member of the Canadiens.

The game wear on this vintage wool sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint and die transfer, un-repaired holes, heavy pilling throughout and in excess of a dozen team-sewn repairs, with some of the repair work serving as reinforcement to the crest and player numbers. Shown above is a beautiful photo of Hicke wearing this exact sweater prior to the start of the 1962-63 season. The original tie-string remains sewn through the eyelets while best of all no moth damage exists on this spectacular wool! This rare style was worn by Montreal during road games throughout the 1962-63 season and some speculate perhaps into the following year as well. It is the first such example of this hobby rarity with the player numbers sewn into the shoulder yoke that we’ve ever had the pleasure to handle and just the second we ever recall seeing appear at Major Auction. A spectacular vintage wool that is now more than half a century removed from the ice and ready to take its place in any serious Original 6 Era collection, choice!
