1950s Tony Leswick or Dutch Reibel Detroit Red Wings Wool Game Worn Jersey
Lot #19

This road white wool gamer by Lippman’s Sporting Goods was worn circa the mid 1950’s by either Tony Leswick or Earl “Dutch” Reibel. As the 1950’s began, the NHL witnessed the dominance of the Red Wings who were led throughout the decade by Hall of Famers such as Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk, Ted Lindsay, Red Kelly, Sid Abel, Alex Delvecchio, Norm Ullman and Marcel Pronovost. Detroit appeared in 5 Stanley Cup Finals over a 7-year period to start the decade and walked away with 4 Stanley Cup Championships. The 1950’s are easily considered the best decade in franchise history.

Leswick famously scored the Stanley Cup clinching goal in 1954 for Detroit, while wearing his white sweater. An image of Leswick with his white #8 and the Cup are depicted above on the cover of Blueline magazine. Tony spent his first 6 NHL seasons with the New York Rangers before joining the Red Wings in 1951-52. Leswick played in Detroit for the next four seasons before leaving to spend a year with the Blackhawks and then returning for one final year with the Wings in 1957-58. Earl “Dutch” Reibel made his NHL debut in 1953-54 with Detroit where he played for five years before finishing up his career with stays in Chicago and Boston.

Sewn into the hem of this gamer is the size tag. Previously sewn alongside and now lost to history is the Lippman’s Sporting Goods tag. The game wear on this size 46 sweater is tremendous and consists of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes and trauma, inner pilling and in excess of two dozen team-sewn repairs. A wonderful well-worn example that is now more than 60-years removed from the ice and hails from an era of sheer dominance by this storied original 6 franchise, choice!
