1928-29 Andy Aitkenhead Springfield Indians Wool Sweater
Lot #541

This beautiful wool cardigan sweater was worn by Stanley Cup winning Goalie Andy Aitkenhead during the 1928-29 CAHL season. Aitkenhead, who was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1904 came to Canada as a youngster and played professionally from the early 1920’s thru 1941. He spent 3 seasons in the NHL backstopping the New York Rangers from 1932-35. As a rookie, he led the Rangers to the Stanley Cup in 1932-33 thanks to a pair of shutouts in the Rangers 4-game sweep of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Sewn into the collar of this heavy wool sweater is a tag sporting the chain-stitched player name “Andy Aitkenhead”. This stunning representation features the still vibrant orange and blue team colors of the Springfield Indians. Stitched onto the left breast is the gorgeous Indian Head Logo. The condition of this cardigan is spectacular right down to each of the original 8 buttons being sewn in place, a true condition rarity. This example is the first of its kind that we’ve ever had the pleasure to handle. Impeccably preserved, this spectacular 90-year old offering was worn by the man who backstopped the New York Rangers to their 2nd ever Stanley Cup Championship!
