Savard, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986, began his NHL career with Les Habiitants in 1967. He spent the first 15 seasons of a 17-year career with Montreal. During that time, which spanned in excess of 1000 games, Serge won 8 Stanley Cup championships and was victorious in two of the most important International series of all time, the 1972 Summit Series and the 1976 Canada Cup.
He was the glue that held the Canadiens defense together and his stellar play was aptly recognized with 4 NHL All Star game berths. Serge was a 2nd team NHL All Star in 1979, a Conn Smythe Trophy winner as MVP of the playoffs in 1969 and was the recipient of the Bill Masterson trophy for the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey in 1979. Savard served as backup Team Captain for the Canadien’s during the late 1970’s reign of Yvan Cournoyer. Following the Roadrunner’s retirement, Serge was named permanent Team Captain and served as such until leaving Montreal.
