This Victoriaville Pro hockey stick was used by center Ron Stewart while playing for the New York Rangers. Stewart had a long 21 season NHL career playing for the Maple Leafs, Bruins, Blues, Rangers, Canucks and Islanders. Most of those seasons, approx. 18 of them, were spent with the Maple Leafs and Rangers. After Ron's playing days were over he coached twice, once for the Rangers and then again for the Kings.
Stewart was involved in a tragic off-ice incident in New York that directly claimed the life of Hall of Fame goaltender Terry Sawchuk, his roommate at the time. Although no one knows exactly what happened, or if it was really horseplay or a fight, this is the account which is most often heard. Apparently Sawchuk and Stewart got into a fight in a bar. Stewart took a swing at Sawchuk and they were both asked to leave. When they returned home the fight continued and Sawchuk took a swing at Stewart. The punch glanced off Stewart and Sawchuk fell into a barbecue pit seriously injuring himself with a lacerated liver and blood clots. Blood clots were surgically removed but one clot stopped Sawchuk's heart and he died on May 31, 1970.
The stick is fully taped on the butt and blade. It has the "Mailhot & Freres Inc. Victoriaville, Que" stamp on each side. The player name "Stewart" is also stamped on the side.
