2009-10 Alexander Ovechkin Capitals Game Worn Jersey - 500th NHL Point - ESPN Play of the Year - Photo Match - Video Match - Team Letter
Lot #75

This road white air-knit gamer by Reebok was worn by Alexander Ovechkin as he notched his 500th career NHL point, during the 2009-10 NHL season. Ovechkin was the 1st overall selection in the 2004 NHL entry draft by the Washington Capitals. He has lived up to the hype, and is already looked upon as one of the greats of the game. As a rookie, Alex won the Calder Trophy with a 52 goal, 106-point performance. Other hardware in the growing case include the Art Ross trophy for leading the NHL in points, the Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy for leading the NHL in goals, the Hart Trophy awarded to the NHL’s MVP and the Lester B. Pearson Trophy as the NHL’s outstanding player. Ovechkin has already established himself as a mainstay in the NHL All Star game and also has a handful of 1st team NHL All Star selections to his credit. In his five seasons he has registered goal totals of 52, 46, 65, 56 and 50 which places him on a scary historical pace. His goals per game average stands at .68, trailing the likes of Mike Bossy and Mario Lemieux. He has also averaged a robust 1.33 points per game with 529 points in 396 games played.

Numerous incredible photo and video matches appear above, documenting Ovechkin’s time in this sweater that led up to the Olympic break. We will now offer a game-by-game log for this historic jersey.

Game 1: Alex first donned this sweater on February 2nd, 2010 against the Boston Bruins and scored his 36th goal of the season and also added 2 PIMS.

Game 2: Next up was ‘The Game’ at Madison Square Garden on February 4th, 2010. During this game, Ovechkin scored 2 goals, #’s 37 and 38 and an assist. Goal # 38 was one for the record books in classic Ovechkin style, as with time running out in the 2nd period he scores a highlight reel 1-handed goal that also happened to be his 500th career point, while wearing this sweater. Furthermore, he gets ridden into the boards after the goal and tears the entire left elbow area of this jersey which is fully captured in the video highlights shown above. Amazingly, the Capitals didn’t repair the tear during the 2nd period intermission. Several photo-matches are shown above of Alex wearing this jersey during the 3rd period at MSG with the un-repaired elbow material flapping around! In addition, ESPN recently ranked this 1st in their top 10 plays of the 2009-10 NHL season!

Game 3: It was onto Montreal on February 10th, 2010. Alex assisted on 2 goals that night. The video highlight provided above shows Ovechkin as a man amongst boys, bowling over the 6’7” 240lb. Hal Gill like a pin and scoring yet another ridiculous goal while wearing this sweater. Sadly the goal was eventually disallowed.

Game 4: The very next night, on February 11th, 2010, Ovechkin assisted on a goal and served a 2-minute minor. A photo-match of Ovechkin entering the penalty box in Ottawa is shown above which clearly shows the heavy repair work to the left elbow area.

Game 5: Alex last wore this gamer in St. Louis on February 13th, 2010. It was the first time he was held without a point, despite managing 8 shots on goal. A photo-match from St. Louis is shown above where we first see the heavy stick mark to the belly of this historic sweater.

In 5 games while wearing this sweater, Ovechkin tallied 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points and was a +4 with 4 PIMS.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this historic gamer is the Captain’s “C”, making this the second road Captain’s jersey of his career. Ovechkin was first handed the Captaincy on January 5th, 2010. The game wear on this sweater consists of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, inner pilling and one of the more significant team-sewn repairs you’ll likely ever see on a gamer from this or any era. The fact that this massive tear occurred on the play that Alex scored his 500th point only adds to this sweaters already tremendous lore. The multiple photo matches and amazing video documentation that are shown above further cement this as one of, if not the, finest Ovechkin gamer in the hobby. Put this awesome jersey in your collection and beam with pride over the next decade as you watch the legend that is Alexander Ovechkin grow. This jersey will be accompanied by a Capitals team letter.
