2001-02 Olaf Kolzig Washington Capitals Game Worn Jersey - "9/11" Lot #169
This home white air-knit gamer by CCM was worn by goaltender Olaf Kolzig during the 2001-02 NHL season. The Washington Capitals selected Kolzig in the 1st round of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. He would go on to become the most successful goalie in Capitals history, backstopping the club for 16 seasons and winning better than 300 games during his career. “Olie The Goalie” led the Caps to the Stanley Cup Finals for the only time in team history in 1998. He captured the Vezina Trophy as the leagues best goaltender in 2000 and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2006. This two-time NHL All Star was also named 1st Team NHL All Star in 2000. Internationally Kolzig represented Germany in numerous World Championships, 2 World Cups of Hockey and 2 Olympics.
Sewn to the right breast of this gamer is the 9-11 American Flag patch. On September 11th 2001, as the season had just gotten underway, a great tragedy befell the United States as terrorists slammed passenger jets into both Twin Towers and the Pentagon while failing in another attempt at the White House. Countless people lost their lives and in honor of that tragedy the Washington Capitals donned this 9-11 patch on their game sweaters that season.
This size 58 goalie cut sweater has custom shortened sleeves that show areas of pilling at the cuffs from Olie’s goalie gloves. Typical light goalie use exists with some stick and puck marks worthy of mention. One of a seldom few patched examples worn by this 300-Win club member over the course of his storied career.
