This black air-knit gamer by Nike was worn by Sandy McCarthy during the 1998-99 NHL season. McCarthy was one of the nineties most feared pugilists. He began his career with Calgary in 1993-94 and remained with the club for 5 seasons. A deadline deal in 1997-98 sent him to Tampa where he spent a year before another deadline deal in 1998-99 sent him to Philadelphia. For the 3rd consecutive season McCarthy was dealt in a 2000 deadline deal to the Carolina Hurricanes. Sandy joined the New York Rangers the following season and remained with the club for most of the next four years other than a brief stint in Boston. McCarthy played for 11 seasons, slugging it out with the best of them. He averaged better than 2 PIMS per game throughout his career, 1534 in all with loads of 5 minute majors along the way.
McCarthy wore this sweater after joining the Flyers following a deadline deal with the Lightning. Sandy played in 13 regular season games and another 6 playoff contests that season. Fight abuse is clearly evident, the back of the collar having been torn down to the area of the nameplate which has been replaced. Other game wear consists of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer and inner pilling.
