This road black knit gamer by Starter was worn by Tomas Sandstrom during the 1996-97 NHL season. The New York Rangers selected this native of Finland in the 2nd round of the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. Sandstrom made his NHL debut in 1984-85 with the Blueshirts and remained a Ranger for parts of 6 seasons until a deal sent him to Los Angeles in 1990. He would spend a handful of years playing alongside Wayne Gretzky with the Kings, where he enjoyed a trip to the Cup Finals in 1993. He was later dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1994. Tomas spent parts of 4 years playing with the likes of Lemieux and Jagr in Steeltown before a trade sent him to Detroit midway thru the 1996-97 season. It proved a fabulous deal for Sandstrom as that Spring he captured the Stanley Cup as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. Sandstrom spent the final 2 years of his NHL career in Anaheim and then went to Europe where he played another 3 years with Malmo in the Swedish Elite League.
All told this fierce winger played in 983 NHL games where he adeptly scored 394 goals and 857 points while racking up 1193 PIMS. Sandstrom was a 2-time NHL All Star who had a number of impressive statistical seasons throughout his lengthy career. He was twice a 40-goal man, scoring a career best 45 goals in 68 games in 1990-91. On the international scene Sandstrom put forth an impressive resume for team Sweden. He partook in numerous World Championships, 2 Canada Cups, Rendezvous ‘87 as a member of Team NHL against the Russians and 2 Olympic games.
