He next spent 3 years with the NCAA’s University of Maine. Colin then joined the ECHL where he represented the San Diego Gulls, Atlantic City Boardwalks, Greenville Grrrowl, Fresno Falcons and Idaho Steelheads. More recently, Shields spent several seasons playing for the Belfast Giants of the EIHL.
