This home white knit gamer by CCM was worn by Tom Barrasso during the Penguins 1st Stanley Cup winning season, 1990-91. This Boston Massachusetts native enjoyed a stellar career that began with the Buffalo Sabres in 1983-84 and was so honored with the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year and the Vezina Trophy as league’s best goaltender. Barrasso shared the Jennings Trophy the following season with teammate Bob Sauve.
In his career he was 3 times a 1st or 2nd team NHL All Star and played in the NHL All Star game in 1985. Tom represented Team USA in the 1984 and 1987 Canada Cups. He won 2 Stanley Cups during his career, both with the Pittsburgh Penguins who acquired Tom from the Sabres in 1988-89. Tommy led the Pens to back to back Cup wins in 1990-91 and 1991-92. In 1992-93 Barrasso led the NHL in wins with 43. 1992-93 looked like it would be a 3-peat for the mighty Pens, but they fell in an overtime game 7 shocker in the playoffs to derail the would be dynasty. During his career Barrasso won an impressive 369 games, good for 13th on the all-time list. A compelling case will surely be made for Hall of Fame induction for Barrasso in the near future.
Sewn to the left shoulder of this gamer is the 1990 NHL All Star game patch, celebrating the 41st annual contest. The game wear consists of stick and puck marks including a strong slash through the sleeve number, some minor sweat staining and pilling. On the crest resides a signature in Barrasso’s hand. Penned in the trainer’s hand on the collar tag is Tommy’s #35 in black sharpie.
The 1990 NHL All Star game was held at Pittsburgh’s Civic Arena. The Penguins wore the All Star patch during the 1989-90 season and would continue to wear the All Star game patch on their gamers during the early part of the 1990-91 season as well. The Chicago Black Hawks, host of the 1991 NHL All Star game, lodged a formal complaint with the NHL and the league eventually ruled that the Pens would no longer be allowed to wear the All Star game patches on their jerseys. This 1st set gamer is from the only set of All Star game patched jerseys worn during the Pens 1st ever Stanley Cup winning season, thus marking its place in Pittsburgh Penguins team history. This fine looking Cup year, All Star patched example would enhance any serious Penguins collection.
