This road green air-knit gamer by CCM and Team Choice was worn by Mike Modano during the first road game of his career! Mike was the 1st overall selection in the 1988 NHL entry draft, going to the Minnesota North Stars. He has been the face of the Minnesota/Dallas franchise for 21 years while compiling certain Hall of Fame statistics. Thru the end of the 2009-10 season, Mike had scored 557 goals, 802 assists and 1359 points. He has played in seven NHL All Star games, was 2nd Team NHL All Star in 2000 and has represented Team USA in numerous international competitions including a Canada Cup, 2 World Cups and 3 Olympic Games. Modano is the all-time leading scorer when it comes to American born players. The mantel was finally made complete when Mike captured the Stanley Cup a decade ago in Dallas.
In 1988-89, following a 41-game season with the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL that saw Mike score 39 goals and 105 points, he finally got his first taste of NHL action. The North Stars called the young 18-year old up, just in time for the playoffs. He would see action in 2 Norris Division Semi-Finals playoff games against the St. Louis Blues. Offered here is Modano’s first ever, green game worn jersey, worn during the 1989 playoffs on the road in St. Louis.
Shown above are several stunning photo matches of Modano wearing this exact jersey during his first ever NHL game. Luckily, the cameras were snapping as the NHL’s reigning 1st overall draft choice took the ice for the first time at only 18 years of age. This jersey has been customized by the North Stars, the hem having been shortened. Removed from the left breast is the alternate Captain’s “A”, a letter worn earlier that season by Dennis Maruk for the road games he partook in during his 6-games of play in 1988-89. Also worthy of mention is the name plate change from Maruk to Modano. The game wear on this sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, fine inner pilling and some team-sewn repair work. Areas of sweat staining as well as a heavily salted fight strap caused from what would have been a nerve racking time that would surely make any 18-year perspire as the entire hockey world watched his every move are also evident.
We cannot understate how significant this Hall of Fame caliber jersey will one day be looked upon. An opportunity for any serious North Stars, 500 goal, USA or Hall of Fame collector that shouldn’t be missed. Only one person will be able to say, “I own Mike Modano’s first Minnesota North Stars green game worn jersey”. The question is, will it be you?
