Description
1987-88 Scott Gruhl Pittsburgh Penguins Game Worn Jersey
Lot #107

This road black mesh gamer by Cooper was worn by Scott Gruhl during the 1987-88 NHL season. Gruhl was a career minor leaguer who spent parts of 3 seasons in the NHL. After playing college hockey at Northeastern University, he began a professional career that spanned parts of 3 decades. Gruhl was one of the minor league stars of his day. Gruhl won the James Gatschene Memorial Trophy as the IHL’s MVP in 1984-85, thanks to his 62-goal and 126 point output that season. He recorded a number of 50 goal seasons dating back to the late 1970’s and continuing on into the mid 1990’s, all the while racking up lofty PIM totals. Scott was 4-times a 1st or 2nd Team IHL Al Star and he played on 4 Turner Cup championship teams. Despite also playing in the AHL, CHL and the ECHL, he retired as one of the IHL’s all-time scoring leaders. His time in the NHL came in the early 1980’s as a member of the Los Angeles Kings and in 1987-88 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, while wearing this jersey.

The Penguins were notorious for having different uniform styles on the ice at the same time. This relic, used by the Penguins years earlier, was made up and used by Gruhl during his 6 game stint with Pittsburgh. The Cooper and XL tags sit just alongside the AHA approved tag in the collar. Light game use can be found on this sweater as can a custom old-school fight strap and an autograph in Gruhl’s own hand on the back player number. A nice vintage Penguins jersey that was worn by one of hockey’s lesser known stars.
