Mullen’s career began in St. Louis where he played for parts of 6 seasons before moving on to the Calgary Flames, Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins. Mullen, who grew up in New York’s tough Hell’s Kitchen, was the first U.S. born player to have scored 500 NHL goals. He is a member of the 1000-point club as well as the Hockey Hall of Fame. He owns a Lester Patrick trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States, (2) Lady Byng trophies for the combination of sportsmanship and high ability as well as (3) Stanley Cups championships.
His first Cup title came in 1989 with the Calgary Flames. Joey led all playoff scorers in goals that season with 12. He would also win back to back titles in Pittsburgh in his first two seasons in the Steel City. Joe represented Team USA in the 1984, 1987 and 1991 Canada Cups and played in 3 NHL All Star games. In 1989 he was the NHL’s +/- leader and was also named 1st team NHL All Star.
