1983-84 Jari Kurri Oilers Game Worn Jersey - Photo Match ADDENDUM
Lot #2

This road blue mesh gamer by Nike was worn by Jari Kurri during the 1983-84 Stanley Cup winning season. This Finish born Right Wing joined the Oilers in 1980-81, and soon became one of the leagues biggest scoring threats playing alongside Wayne Gretzky. The Edmonton years were Kurri’s finest and his accomplishments were many. In his 10 seasons with the Oilers Jari won 5 Stanley Cups, was 5 times a 1st or 2nd team NHL All Star, playing in numerous NHL All Star games and Rendezvous 87’. Jari won the 1985 Lady Byng Trophy.

After a year in Europe, Kurri joined the LA Kings, reuniting with Gretzky. In their 2nd season together in LA, the duo took another trip to the Stanley Cup Finals but fell short of the Cup. After 5 seasons in LA, Jari played for the Rangers, Ducks and Avalanche. Kurri was also an active participant on the international stage, representing his native Finland in 2 Olympic Games, 3 Canada Cups, and the 96 World Cup of Hockey. His career statistics are impressive placing him among the all-time elite with 601 goals, 797 assists and 1398 points. In 200 playoff games Kurri tallied 106 goals and 233 points thus cementing him as one of the great right wings of all-time.

This historic gamer was worn by Kurri during the Oilers first ever Stanley Cup winning season. 1983-84 was also the first 50-goal season in Jari’s career. In an injury shortened 64 game campaign, Jari tabbed 52 goals and 113 points as the Oilers became the highest scoring team in NHL history. The game wear on this sweater is solid consisting of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, inner pilling and a handful of team-sewn repairs. Shown above is a photo-match of Kurri wearing this exact jersey standing alongside Gretzky and Anderson, each holding their 50-goal pucks. In response to the many inquiries we have received, we have added close-up pics to show some of the series of stick marks which are photo-matched and remain visible on the jersey to this day. These series of heavy stick marks and slashes are somewhat difficult to see thru photography, but are plain to see while holding the sweater in your hands. We also want to address the many queries we have received about this being Kurri's Stanley Cup Finals gamer. In our opinion, which is shared by every Oilers collector we have spoken with, this is most likely Kurri's Stanley Cup Finals jersey. Review of the game film provided no clear close up shots of Jari at the Nassau Coliseum, and the age and grain of the video tape prevented a conclusive video match from afar. Stylistically this gamer matched the video perfectly, from the sleeve length to the number and nameplate placement etc... The photo match on the cover of the 1984 playoff magazine while holding his 50 goal puck further strengthens the argument, as there is no historic evidence that the Oilers ever went to a new set of jerseys for any of their numerous Stanley Cup Final appearances. Should you have any further questions on this important gamer, please don't hesitate to inquire. Here is one of the finest Kurri jerseys in the hobby, which was worn as the Oilers began their dynasty, and is now ready to take up residence in your collection.
