This home white heavy mesh gamer by CCM was worn by Danny Gare during the 1983-84 season. Following 8 terrific years in Buffalo, Gare was dealt mid-season to the Red Wings in a blockbuster deal which included Jim Schoenfeld, Dale McCourt and Mike Foligno among others.
Danny’s career featured many accomplishments including a league leading 56 goals in 1979-80. He broke onto the scene with a bang in 1974-75 helping the upstart Sabres make their first ever appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals that year, losing to the defending Cup champs, the Philadelphia Flyers. Danny was a key figure during that storybook season as he tallied 31 goals and 62 points as a rookie. He followed that season with a 50-goal campaign in 1975-76 and his path to stardom was assured. Several years later the Sabres made Gare their team Captain, a title that he held for 5 seasons.
Danny was never slow to drop the gloves, and despite his small 5’ 9” frame he was the true definition of a power forward earning him respect from fans and teammates alike. Gare was a member of 2 different Canada Cup teams, 1976 and 1981 as well as 2 NHL All Star teams in 1980 and 1981. He was voted 2nd team NHL All Star for his stellar play during the 1979-80 season.
Following this half season in Detroit, Danny was handed the prestigious Captain’s “C” of the Red Wings the following year. He proudly held this title for his remaining 4 seasons in Detroit. Gare tallied 354 goals and 1285 PIMS during his 827 game career and will be fondly remembered by all who saw him play as a true competitor and one of the better forwards during his generation.
Sewn to the left breast of this heavy mesh gamer is the Captain’s “C”. Gare was the last Red Wings Captain before Stevie Y’s two decade long run began. The game wear on this jersey is solid featuring stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, inner pilling, un-repaired holes and a couple of handfuls of some very unique team-sewn repairs. This is a fabulous looking short-lived heavy mesh style, which features the large winged wheel crest. These gamers are also significant to Red Wings fans for being the style worn by Steve Yzerman during his rookie season.
