1982-83 Rick MacLeish Penguins Game Worn Jersey
Lot #12

This home Sunday Gold mesh gamer by General Athletic was worn by Rick MacLeish during the 1982-83 NHL season. MacLeish was the 4th overall selection in the 1970 NHL Amatuer draft by the Boston Bruins. He would never suit up for the Bruins, instead beginning a 14-year career with the Philadelphia Flyers where he would spend parts of 12 of those seasons. While with the Flyers, Rick would partake in 4 Stanley Cup Finals emerging victorious 2 times. MacLeish scored the game winning goal in game 6 of the 1974 Cup Finals on home ice as the Flyers won their first Stanley Cup. He was the Flyers first ever 50-goal man a feat he accomplished in 1972-73 and he played in 3 NHL All Star games.

In the summer of 1981 MacLeish was traded away from his beloved Flyers, the only team he knew. He began the year in Hartford and was dealt again mid season to the Penguins where he suited up in 40 contests and sparked the upstart team offensively. In 1982-83 Rick performed at a point per game clip, but had his season shortened by injury. He was signed as a free agent by the Flyers the following summer, spent half a season with them and was then dealt to the Red Wings where he finished out his career.

The Penguins returned to the old style tackle twill crests of the blue and white era on these innovative alternate gamers. Worn by the team during Sunday home games beginning in 1982-83 and lasting only 2 regular seasons, this magnificent example hails from the only gold set ever produced by General Athletic. As would be expected this sweater shows light game use consisting of stick marks and inner pilling. The General Athletic era lasted a brief time in Pittsburgh and their popularity and desirability among collectors has always been sky high. This treasured example was worn by one of hockey’s most electrifying players of the era and marks an excellent chance to obtain a style rarity of an elite level player.
