This road black heavy mesh gamer by Sandow was worn by Ray Bourque during the 1982-83 season. Bourque is considered one of the game’s all-time greats and was so recognized in the now revered ‘The Hockey News’ book which ranked the 50 greatest players in NHL history. Ray was honored as the 14th greatest player in NHL history in that publication. Ray’s accomplishments are too lengthy to list in full; some of the highlights include: 1980 Calder Trophy for NHL Rookie of the Year, 1992 King Clancy Memorial Trophy as the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to his community, (12) 1st and (6) 2nd Team NHL All Star selections, 18 All Star game appearances, 5 Norris Trophies as leagues best defenseman and a Stanley Cup which he finally earned in his last season. Only Bobby Orr (8) and Doug Harvey (7) earned more Norris Trophies than did Ray.
Bourque is the all-time leading scorer among defenseman with 1579 points, which also places him among the elite on the all-time NHL scoring list. Ray is near the top on the all time assists list with 1169, trailing the likes of Gretzky, Messier and Francis. He is also the all-time leading goal scorer among defenseman with 410. Ray also resides in the top 10 all-time leading playoff scorers in NHL history. He was elected to the Hall of Fame on his first ballot in 2004.
This striking heavy mesh gamer has been custom altered to Bourque’s specs. The sleeves have been severely shortened with inserts added to the cuffs, just as Ray liked them during the early part of his career. The game wear is solid just as you would expect to see on a Bruins jersey of this vintage. There are many stick marks, loads of board burns, board paint transfer, fine inner pilling, un-repaired burn holes and approximately 15 team-sewn repairs. Bourque number 7 gamers have been nothing short of elusive and are considered among the hobbies most prized possessions. This spectacular black Sandow is now about a quarter century old, and easily ranks among the finest Bourque gamers that exist in the hobby.
